Prep hoops roundup: Panthers win NGS opener against Monument Valley

It was a good night in limited action Thursday night for Region 9 prep basketball teams as PIne View’s boys and girls teams won and Snow Canyon’s girls team also pulled off a narrow victory.

The Pine View boys, playing without suspended 6-foot-7 center Kody Wilstead, held off Monument Valley (Ariz.) 50-47 at the NGS Tournament in Page, Ariz. Wilstead, who was ejected from Wednesday’s PV-Snow Canyon game for shoving the Warriors’ Brock Staheli, was serving the automatic one-game suspension for the ejection.

Pine-view-smThe Panthers turned to the long ball without the big center, hitting 10 3-pointers in the close win. Garrett Bowker had half of those and finished the game with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

It was a streaky game as PV trailed by trailed by a dozen (18-6) in the first quarter before pulling to within 20-13 after the first eight minutes.

The second quarter was all PV, with the Panthers going on a 12-0 run to take a 25-20 lead behind three baskets from Jed Newby and treys from Bowker and Chaz Peterson.

The Panthers led 30-24 at the half, but the Mustangs rallied in the third and a 3 at the buzzer gave them a 40-39 lead with eight minutes to play.

MVHS led 44-39 in the fourth, but Peterson hit a trey and Newby got a putback to tie the score. Another Bowker trey made it 47-44 and then Peterson struck again to put PV up 50-44 with just moments left in the game. Monument added a 3-pointer late.

Pine View, 5-0, continues winner’s bracket NGS Tournament play Friday. The Panthers have played in the championship game of the tourney two years in a row.
