ST. GEORGE — It was an utterly forgettable night of hoops for boys and girls teams around Region 9, with southern Utah teams going 0-4 in preseason contests.
On the boys side, Desert Hills hosted Centennial, Nev., and the Thunder hung with the powerful Bulldogs for three-fourths of the game before succumbing in a 62-44 final.
Centennial, with two Division 1 signees (Garrett Scheer and Darrian Traylor) and two more underclassmen with D-I schools in pursuit, blew the game open with a 23-point fourth quarter, doubling the margin in the eight-minute stanza.
Sophomore Troy Brown led the way for the Bulldogs. For Desert Hills, Quincy Mathews had 14 points and Austin Adams added 12. The Thunder made just one 3-pointer in the game and shot a miserable 32.6 percent from the floor. The free throws were better, but not good, as DH went 15 of 27 from the line.
The Desert Hills girls team also hosted Centennial and the results were even worse. Playing without starting point guard Ashley Beckstrand, DH was manhandled by the Lady Bulldogs 80-43.
Kenzie Done led D-Hills with 18 points, but Centennial had 52 points in the first half in forging a 32-point lead.
Snow Canyon’s boys hosted Enterprise and the Warriors seemed to be cruising at halftime with a 32-26 lead. But the Wolves dominated the third quarter 18-7 and held on for a 66-62 win in the Jungle.
Jake Jones had 19 points and 9 rebounds and Ricky Ramos added 17 and 8 steals to lead Enterprise, which hosts Pine View Wednesday night.
Jones and Ramos made four 3-pointers each, both hitting during a 17-5 run to start the third quarter. Snow Canyon rallied to tie the game at 60-60 with 1:52 left, but a free throw by Connor Phelps was followed by a Ramos 3-pointer that put EHS up 64-60 and the Wolves hit just enough free throws to seal the win.
Hurricane’s girls team squandered an 18-14 halftime lead by scoring just one point in the third quarter in a 37-29 loss to Beaver in the Tiger’s Den. London Steglich was the high scorer for HHS with eight points. Angela Roberts led Beaver with 18.
