ST. GEORGE — Chandler Swaney loves BYU and as it turns out, BYU loves him, too.
The Desert Hills track star, who holds records in both the high and long jump, committed to continuing his track and field career at Brigham Young University Wednesday afternoon.
“I just love the way they take care of their athletes,” Swaney said. “They have a doctor for every body part, I think. They also said they would add more to my scholarship if I can improve and reach certain goals. I’m going to train a lot harder and I want to set personal records in each event I do.”
Swaney won state in the long jump and high jump last spring at BYU. He jumped 22-feet, 8.75-inches in the long jump, winning easily. He cleared 6-foot-8 at state to take the high jump, though he had cleared 6-9 earlier in the season.
“They started contacting me after I jumped 6-9 at the Snow Canyon Meet,” Swaney said. “I tried 7-feet in that meet and barely clipped the bar with my foot. I like how BYU is pushing me and believes I can do it.”
BYU is coached by former Olympian Ed Eyestone. Swaney will be coached specifically by Mark Robison, the associate head coach who has been at BYU for 29 years.
