ST. GEORGE – A 19-year-old man was arrested by police Thursday for allegedly having sex with a minor.
While interviewing a 15-year-old girl concerning a sex abuse incident, police learned that Tyler James Russo, 19, of St. George, allegedly had sexual intercourse with the girl when she was 14, according to a probable cause statement filed by St. George Police Detective J. Minnick supporting the arrest.
Police located Russo on Thursday and brought him in for questioning. He was advised of his Miranda Rights and allegedly admitted to having sex with the juvenile girl twice. Russo was subsequently arrested on two third-degree felony charges for unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
While being arrested, Russo told police he had marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his backpack. The backpack was searched and police found the paraphernalia and several baggies of suspected marijuana. This resulted in Russo being charged with a second-degree felony for possession of a controlled substance and a class A misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia. The drug charges were enhanced due to police picking Russo up near a church, which constituted a violation of a drug-free zone.
Russo was also arrested on two active warrants related to previous offenses.
Russo was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility with bail set at $19,200.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
