Head-on collision in desert totals 2 vehicles

ST. GEORGE – Two vehicles, a white 1989 Buick Park Avenue and a red Kia Soul, traveling in opposite directions, collided head-on Wednesday in the area of the Bear Claw Poppy trailhead, also known as the Green Valley Loop.

“Both cars appeared to be in the middle of the road a little bit,” St. George Police Sgt. Jeff Bahlman said, “and just collided.”

Josh Weiland, of St. George, driving the Buick, said he was on his way to check out a spot his friend had told him about to ride motorcycles.

“I was going around 25 mph and coming up around the corner,” Weiland said. “I don’t know what happened, but we hit head-on.”

Bahlman stressed the importance of drivers taking extra precaution in the area, especially around curves and turns.

“You’ve just got to be careful on curves when you can’t see around the corner,” Bahlman said. “People should look for the dust clouds or slow down when coming to these blind spots.”

No serious injuries were reported, Bahlman said.

The collision is still under investigation and no citations have been issued at the time of this publication. If the police can’t determine who was at fault, they turn the case over to a city attorney for review, Bahlman said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

You have to believe me officer, I’m absolutely sure I had the right of way (or something).
And besides, the impact made my passenger spill his beer and it got all over me. burp!

    A hillbilly holiday gone bad

  • Junius October 15, 2014 at 8:34 pm

Mr. Carter may want to hold off lumping the Weiland the kid with the other idiot. Since this report was posted the following things have occurred:

1). The driver of the red kia was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
2). Adan Moreno, the driver of the red kia was subsequently cited for driving left of center thus causing the accident. Note they leave out Moreno’s name and he’s the adult driver and only quote the Weiland boy who is a juvenile.
3). Moreno, the kia driver, did NOT have a valid driver’s license at the time of the incident. **Side note, the Weiland boy, unlike the other driver had a valid license.

Bottom line: I agree with S. Carter’s assessment that the driver of the red kia is an idiot. But the Weiland boy seems only to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Also**** Moreno was cited for False Information to a Police Officer regarding the accident. Seems to me to be a pretty clear vindication of Weiland.

  • Harrison Davis October 15, 2014 at 10:17 pm

how bad of a driver do you have to be to do this? Honestly, theyre both idiots. I think this says something about the declining eduction system of the U.S

  • Bobber October 15, 2014 at 10:19 pm

Yep, even on a dirt road they can’t be escaped from. Is it something in the water? Is it the mormon culture? Really, what is breeding all these horrible and reckless drivers?

    • Dana October 16, 2014 at 6:18 am

It’s the inbreeding coupled with the failing Utah schools.

      • frank October 17, 2014 at 12:36 pm

Where did you get your facts from about failing Utah schools? Maybe you should cite some evidence here for us before blurting out falsehoods. You don’t seem very educated to me so I will infer you are from out of state with an out of state attitude.

  • Derk Bakre October 15, 2014 at 10:23 pm

  • GRAPEJUSE October 15, 2014 at 11:43 pm

The way that Kia’s wheels are turned it looks to me like someone was doing some dirt-road drifting….

  • indy-vfr October 16, 2014 at 6:09 am

The funniest line…..”I was going about 25″……Even on a narrow gravel road, I’ve never seen anyone going 25 in this town! Probably 45 to 55.

Wow! “Helping the minor” Arlene????? Good Lord, if that’s your idea of “helping” we’d hate to see your definition of “hurting.” So, in your world, the adult driver of the other vehicle, the guy with no license, a warrant for his arrest, who subsequently gets cited for causing the accident AND lying to the cops, is actually doing the juvenile driver of the other car a favor by hitting him? Think before you post these things Arlene, or at least wait until the glue fumes wear off before you hit the keyboard.

And “Mormon drivers is so stupid!” Awesome slice of religious bigotry Bobber. Subtle in your delivery and so eloquent in your turn of phrase.

And of course, Harrison ….when one calls out the intellect of others, perhaps carefully examining the punctuation of the word “theyre” prior to posting would give greater gravitas to your clearly enlightened commentary on the state of the educational system.

  • beerbelly October 16, 2014 at 8:38 am

I am impressed by the guy driving a Buick on a dirt road. That shows intelligence.
Seriously though, some of these dirt roads have sides built up 4 or 5 feet high and you can’t see around the next turn. I have personally almost had a few ATV and motorcycle riders as hood ornaments for my Jeep. People drive too fast for the limited visibility and do not look for incoming dust clouds.

  • JOSH DALTON (INCOGNEGRO) October 16, 2014 at 10:17 am

WOW! On a dirt road. No other traffic. No signals. Utonians can’t drive! These stoners were packing bowl when this went down.. I know it!

  • And... October 16, 2014 at 5:35 pm

And sometime soon folks the rest of the story…

  • Koolaid October 17, 2014 at 12:53 pm

That’s how they hook up in Dixie.
