ST. GEORGE – What do you get when you mix dance fitness and flash mob? A new fitness experience that will not only have you dancing to music from the ’80s and today but will combine a workout you will love with the opportunity to share it with the community.
Created by The Underground Fitness’s Andrea Riggs – a dancer, Zumba instructor and fitness professional – Flashdance dance fitness is set to take Southern Utah by storm teaching easy to follow dance workouts to iconic tunes from across the decades.
In May of 2009, Riggs and her husband opened The Warehouse, a fitness facility that, at the time, was one of the first of its kind in Southern Utah, Riggs said.
“We were really one of the first to make dance fitness a big deal in St. George,” Riggs said, “we did a mass amount of training at The Warehouse and really helped shape many of the Zumba instructors that are here.”
The Warehouse operated under a philosophy that was inclusive and welcoming to all people no matter their shape, size or fitness level, Riggs said, and at their peak they saw a regular crowd of 70-100 people per class.
After spending several years on the east coast – her husband’s career took their family out there and she was contracted with Zumba fitness to be a Zumba Jammer, Riggs said – they have returned to St. George and have revamped and renamed their old warehouse fitness space; now, The Underground.
Among the renovations are a new floating floor – their previous floor was cement – a new, bigger stage and exciting lighting that feels more like a dance club than a gym.
In addition to improvements in the facility, Riggs said, she spent much of the time while she was away from St. George really focusing on becoming a fitness professional not just a Zumba teacher and is now a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor.
But though some things have changed, their philosophy of providing a comfortable, fun and all-inclusive atmosphere remains the same.
“We are really big about building the community,” Riggs said, “it’s not just ‘The Underground is a really neat place and oh they used to do Zumba,’ it is so much more. We want to benefit the community and change peoples’ lives.”
The Underground will hold its grand reopening on Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. with the unveiling of their newest class.
Flashdance is the combination of dance fitness and the ever popular web trend of flash mobs set to the soundtrack of the 80s and beyond. The class of Riggs’ own creation and choreography will follow the dance fitness formula of easy to follow and repetitive routines designed to get your heart rate up and your muscle groups working in a fun and energetic way.
Flashdance classes will be a regular part of The Underground’s schedule on Monday-Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m.
Those who attend the Sept. 29 event will be invited to participate in a flash mob to be held in an already decided but as yet undisclosed (read TOP SECRET) location and event in town during the month of October. Additionally, those who come to the grand reopening dressed in ’80s workout attire will receive free admission.
“People have to be at the Sept. 29 class to be involved in the flash mob,” Riggs said, “but we won’t tell the location, we won’t tell the date, we won’t tell what the event is until the day of because it is a secret and we don’t want it to get out.”
Members of the class will learn a variety of routines, Riggs said, and one of them will be picked to be the number performed at the flash mob.
Riggs recognizes that people have busy schedules and different fitness motivations and hopes this will be a fun way to encourage people to come to class, she said, so that when the flash mob happens they know a bunch of the routines and get to perform what they have learned.
The Underground also features kettlebell classes as well as ballet barre classes and the Riggs also have an online body transformation program complete with diet and fitness coaching. To learn more visit their website or “like” them on Facebook.
“I crave movement, I crave that energy and that is what I am after,” Riggs said.
