BLM hosts open house for Old Spanish Trail plan

CEDAR CITY — A public open house for an Old Spanish Trail recreation plan will be hosted on Tuesday, Aug. 19, by the Bureau of Land Management-Utah Cedar City Field Office. The event takes place at the Southern Utah University Gerald R. Sherratt Library, Room 002, from 2-5 p.m.

Working in concert with the local chapter of the Old Spanish Trail Association, Iron County Tourism, State Institutional Trust Land Administration and the BLM, the plan for a recreational trail that follows the historical Old Spanish Trail was designed by student interns from SUU and Utah State University.

The BLM interns will lead the open house discussion, describing to attendees the design plan and highlights of the trail system.

“Helping build public land stewards by offering students internships and opportunities to assist with projects like the Old Spanish Trail recreation plan,” BLM recreation planner Dave Jacobson said, “provides real-world experience and helps achieve land-use objectives.”

The trail design includes information kiosks, trailheads, and motorized and nonmotorized routes. The trail also features a stop at a soon-to-be-constructed Old Spanish Trail Museum in the City of Enoch.  The trail extends 80 miles from Circleville to Enterprise.
