ST. GEORGE – Bryant Raines of St. George was arrested early Friday morning on a first-degree felony charge after a woman awoke to him attempting to force himself sexually on her.
“We were contacted by an adult woman, who was at a party last evening,” St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said. “She had fallen asleep, and awoke to Mr. Raines trying to force his male body part on her.”
There was also a witness to these events, Despain said, and the woman immediately called the police.
“We investigated and developed enough probable cause to arrest Mr. Raines for forcible sodomy,” he said.
Alcohol was served at the party and everyone had been drinking, Despain said; however, based on the investigation, police do not believe that alcohol played a factor in the alleged offense.
“The woman was not passed out,” he said. “This happened in the early morning hours so she was asleep.”
He awoke her by his actions, Despain said.
Police arrested Raines and booked him into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of forcible sodomy. Bail is set at $25,000. Raines remains in jail, as this report is published, according to the county sheriff’s booking Web page.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
