ST. GEORGE – Residents are encouraged to catch dance fever Saturday in observance of National Dance Day.
National Dance Day is a nationally recognized day created to encourage residents of the United States to get up and get active.
National Dance Day was founded in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator. The Dizzy Feet Foundation sponsors National Dance Day by hosting large events in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City and encourages those who cannot make it to these locations to create their own Dance Day celebrations in their local areas. April Keil and her family have done just that, bringing the St. George community together Saturday for a free night of dancing, music, family and fun at Dixie Regional Medical Center.
“Coming together and dancing together as a family, a community – that’s what it is all about,” Keil said.
The night will start off at 8 p.m. with 15 minutes of entertainment showcasing local dance talent, including Kalamity, Polynesian dancers, and male dancers that will perform the Haka, a tribal dance that originated in New Zealand.
Local dance teachers, Zumba fitness instructors and local disc jockey DJK will then lead dancers to move and sway the night away for two hours. The National Dance Day event will wind down at 10 p.m.
Dixie Regional Medical Center began sponsoring the local National Dance Day event in 2013. Free refreshments and cold water will be provided. Chairs will be available all night for anyone who wants to come but cannot dance the entire time. All are invited.
“This is a family event,” Keil said. “We always say, ‘families that dance together, stay together.'”
