ST. GEORGE – Utah Highway Patrol arrested Danny Miller, of Hurricane, Tuesday morning after his white Ford F-150 left the southbound traffic lane on Interstate 15, just north of the St. George Boulevard overpass, and collided with a freeway sign. UHP’s subsequent investigation revealed that Miller was driving under the influence.
Trooper Grant Hintze was stationary near I-15 mile marker 9 when passersby alerted him to the accident. The passersby informed Hintze that the driver may have been injured.
“I arrived, saw the truck as well as a few witnesses on scene,” Hintze said.
Hintze discovered that the truck had been headed south on I-15 when it left the roadway and crashed into the sign.
The St. George City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance arrived and proceeded to assess Miller’s condition. Miller subsequently signed a medical release denying medical treatment.
“As I continued my investigation into the accident I began to suspect the driver was under the influence of some kind of substance,” Hintze said.
Hintze requested Miller to submit to a series of field sobriety tests, which Miller agreed to do.
After the field sobriety tests were completed, Miller was taken into custody for driving under the influence. He was then transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for a blood draw and a medical clearance.
Miller was booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of driving under the influence, a class-B misdemeanor; no proof of insurance, a class-B misdemeanor; and improper lane travel, a class-C misdemeanor.
As of the publication of this article, he is still incarcerated. Bail has been set at $1,950.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
