LAVERKIN – Around 3:30 p.m. Friday, police officers and emergency responders were dispatched on a report of a possible suicidal man at the LaVerkin Bridge who was allegedly preparing to jump. When responders arrived, they found Robert Lee Beaumont, 39, of LaVerkin.
LaVerkin Police had initially called out negotiators from the Washington County Sheriff’s office but cancelled them when they arrived and found that Beaumont was not suicidal but was attempting to rappel off the bridge.
“The male subject was apparently trying to do some sort of jump off of the bridge,” LaVerkin Police Chief Benjamin Lee said. “The rope had been prepared for the illegal jump, but officers were able to stop him before he completed it.”
Beaumont was advised that he was not allowed to rappel off the bridge and proceeded to get upset at officers before running off into Hurricane, Lee said.
“Despite Beaumont’s attitude, officers involved handled themselves with professionalism,” Lee said.
Around 5:30 p.m., LaVerkin Police received another call notifying them that Beaumont was back at the bridge and possibly trying to rappel again. As officers responded to the area, they found Beaumont about a block below the bridge, walking south into Hurricane City around the 900 North block of State Street.
“The subject came into the Hurricane area and was acting suspiciously,” Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said. “It was reported to us that he was throwing rocks and was jumping into traffic. There was no indication that he was doing either of these things, according to the officers who responded.”
As officers moved in to speak to Beaumont, who Buell said was acting agitated, Beaumont took off running eastbound from State Street.
“Officers on scene allowed Beaumont to walk away up the hillside, as there was no evidence he had committed any offense,” Buell said.
