WASHINGTON CITY – An 18-wheeler overturned on Landfill Road just off Telegraph Street while en route to dump a load of garbage at the Washington County Landfill Friday.
While making a turn onto Landfill Road, the right front tire apparently blew and caused the 18-wheeler to roll onto it’s side around 4:45 p.m., Washington City Fire Chief Brent Hafen said at the scene.
He said the truck was hauling trash from Page, Ariz., which has a contract to dump trash at the Washington County Landfill.
The driver, who was alert and able to walk, Hafen said, was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center as a precaution after complaining about his back.
The Washington City Fire and Police departments responded to the accident, and a member of the Utah Highway Patrol was also on scene investigating the crash.
The scene of the accident is still being cleaned up as of 5:35 p.m.
Ed Kantor, Washington City Police public information officer, confirmed much of what Hafen said, though could not confirm the cause of the wreck. The driver told police it was possible mechanical issues played a part in the crash.
“We just don’t know yet,” Kantor said. The investigation is ongoing.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.
