ST. GEORGE – Flag Day, a day set aside nationally to honor Old Glory, the United States flag, is this Saturday. That morning, city streets will be lined with American flags as one home after another has the flag posted in front of it by Boy Scout troops, volunteers and citizens. To conclude the day, old and worn flags will be disposed of in a reverent and respectful manner at the community’s first large scale Flag Retirement Ceremony and Military Tribute at the Dixie Sunbowl.
For a long time separate organizations in the area have held their own flag retirement ceremonies, said Joe Bowcutt, of the St. George Lions Club and St. George City Council. However, none have yet been on the scale planned at the Dixie Sunbowl.
“We’re trying to pull all those groups together,” Bowcutt said. The event will include the Lions Club, Boy and Girl Scout troops, the local National Guard, area veterans, and others.
The purpose of the flag retirement ceremony is to take old American flags that are beyond repair and burn them in an honorable and dignified manner, Bowcutt said.
In addition to the flag retirement ceremony, there will also be a tribute to the military. Various military representatives will address those assembled, Bowcutt said, and the themes of each branch of the military will played.
“We’ll also be honoring all the first responders,” he said.
Bowcutt said he is involved in organizing the event because he doesn’t like the direction the country is heading, and hopes the event will help rekindle a sense of patriotism at the grass-roots level.
“I sometimes think we’ve lost the patriotism we used to have,” Bowcutt said. “It’ll be a good event for the young, and cynical old people too.”
