ST. GEORGE – On Sunday, the Southern Utah Heritage Choir will present its annual salute to the armed forces with a musical fireside; “And to the Republic for Which it Stands”. The fireside will be held in the St George Tabernacle, 18 S. Main Street, at 7 p.m.
The choir will pay tribute to all veterans who have valiantly served our country with popular patriotic numbers including, “Salute to the Armed Forces,” “God Bless America,” “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Guest singers, Ellie Felice Seegmeiller, age 5, and her mother, Lisa Hopkins Seegmiller, will sing “The National Anthem” and “America the Beautiful,” respectively.
Dr. Nancy Allred will direct the choir with Karen Lee Cantera on organ and Bandon Lee on piano.
Lyman Hafen, local historian, author, and lecturer will be the guest speaker for the evening. Hafen will be sharing stories from his book, “Far From Cactus Flat.” The book relates the story of the Bundy family and life on the Arizona Strip during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. It also tells about the two “sons of the strip,” Lincoln Bundy and George Iverson, who went to fight during World War II and didn’t make it back.
Hafen is the Executive Director of the Zion Natural History Association. His ancestors were a pioneering Mormon family that settled along the Virgin and Santa Clara rivers in the early 1860s. He is the founding editor of St George Magazine and has taught classes at Dixie College. He and his wife, Debbie, live in Santa Clara.
This will be the final performance of the season for the choir and the community is invited to attend what is sure to be a touching evening of patriotic music and words that will be remembered with fondness.
