3A State Softball: Warriors, Falcons stay alive, Lady Reds bow out

SPANISH FORK – Snow Canyon survived to play at least one more day while Cedar and Canyon View both lost their openers Thursday at the 3A State Softball Tournament in Spanish Fork’s Swenson Park.

The Falcons staved off elimination with a rebound win, while Cedar lost a second game Thursday night and bowed out of the 2014 tournament.

Snow Canyon’s one-loss match-up was with Payson and the Lady Warriors scored early and often. Payson kept pace for awhile, matching SC’s 4-1 start with a three-spot in the second inning. But Snow Canyon plated four more runs in the third inning and then added two insurance runs in the fifth to pull away for a 10-4 victory.

Shelbee Hutchings had three hits and four RBIs, while Sonja Hardy and Skylar Gates both homered as SC earned the right to play another day. The Warriors will face Bear River at 11 a.m. Friday with the winner playing again at 1:15 p.m. and the loser going home.

No. 1 seed Cedar dropped two games and ended its season Thursday. The Lady Reds dropped from the winner’s bracket with a 5-0 loss to defending-champion Stansbury. Then Cedar fell in an elimination game to Bear River, 7-5.

Canyon View also lost its winner’s bracket game, going down 7-1 to No. 1-ranked Uintah. But CV rebounded with a 7-0 winb over Carbon to stay alive. The Falcons play No. 1-seeded Tooele at 11 a.m. Friday in an elimination. The Buffaloes were stunned by Juab 6-3 earlier Thursday.
