CEDAR CITY – The Iron County Children’s Justice Center will host the annual Run for the Kids 5K and quarter marathon Saturday morning, and participants will have a chance to win an entry into the St. George Marathon.

Registration is $25 per person for either the 5K or the 6.55-mile quarter marathon. Registration will increase to $30 Thursday night at midnight. Online registration is available for individual participants, or they can also register onsite the morning of the event. Teams of five or more people must register for the race by directly contacting the Children’s Justice Center, contact information provided below.

Prizes will be awarded three deep in each category. The race will feature giveaways such as a Kindle Fire and an entry to the St. George Marathon. For runners who were not selected in the St. George Marathon lottery process, this offers another opportunity to run in this year’s marathon.

All proceeds from the race will support the Children’s Justice Center in its efforts to combat child abuse.

The Iron County Children’s Justice Center is a nonprofit organization that coordinates with law enforcement and child protective services to provide the best care possible for child abuse victims and their families, whether the child has experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence or drug endangerment.

It’s just a very safe, natural, comfortable place for victims and their families to be able to receive services,” Stephanie Furnival, director of the Iron County Children’s Justice Center, said.

The facility will be open before, during and after the race for the community to walk through it,  Furnival said, which gives people the opportunity to become familiar with the center in case they have to receive services there someday.

“Last year, we decided to have the start at the center itself,” she said, “because so many people come out and support us that we actually wanted them to be able to see the facility.”

The race helps bring awareness to the issues of child abuse.

“What’s nice is to bring people out so that they can be a part of the Children’s Justice Center, because this is the community’s justice center,” Furnival said. “We actually serve Iron, Beaver and Garfield counties.”

Furnival said the Children’s Justice Center just announced Wednesday that Kane County will now have a satellite office of the Iron County Children’s Justice Center to provide services for residents there.
