Reckless driver crashes after hit-and-run

CEDAR CITY – A suspect was caught after fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run Tuesday evening in Cedar City on Interstate 15.

The Utah Highway Patrol was notified of a reckless driver traveling northbound on I-15 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Sgt. Ryan Bauer said. At approximately 5:34 p.m., the reckless driver traveling in a Toyota Camry hit a Toyota Prius at mile marker 57, he said.

The male driver of the Camry fled the scene and ultimately crashed at mile marker 59, just off of the 200 North Cedar City exit.

Witnesses estimated that before the wreck he was traveling at speeds of 100 mph or more, Bauer said. No other passengers were in the vehicle. The air bags were deployed during the wreck.

After crashing, the driver continued to flee on foot. While attempting to jump a fence the man stopped after he was approached by Highway Patrol who told him to stop, Bauer said.

Then he was transported to Valley View Medical Center with minor injuries. Once the man is released from the hospital, Bauer said he will be booked on charges of fleeing the scene and failing to stop for an officer.

The female driver of the Prius did not sustain any injuries and was able to drive away from the scene.

This accident is still under investigation.
