Softball roundup: Falcons win 10th straight to grab first place in Region 9

CEDAR CITY — With Josie Platt pitching as well as she has all season and the Canyon View bats knocking the softball all around the yard, the Lady Falcons have become the team to beat in Region 9.

Thursday, Canyon View won its 10th straight game by blasting Dixie 13-1, scoring eight of the 13 in the first inning. CV hit five home runs in the game and invoked the mercy rule after just four and a half innings.

softbPlatt, a senior pitcher, allowed six hits and one run, but the big story on this day was the hitting for Canyon View. Kenzie Sawyer hit three home runs — giving her nine on the season — and brought home five RBIs. Cheyanne Anderson hit a grand slam in that big first inning as CV was never challenged in the game. Platt also homered for Canyon View.

The Falcons, 15-4 overall and 9-2 in region, are a half-game ahead of Cedar in the race for the region title. Canyon View finishes region play Tuesday against last-place Hurricane.

Dixie, which fell to 8-11 overall and 5-5 in region play, got a double from Hannah Nyberg. The Flyers are still in fourth place and two wins their final two region games (or a Desert Hills loss) will clinch a playoff spot. Dixie is at home against Cedar Tuesday and at Pine View Friday.

Cedar 14, Snow Canyon 9

It will be tough for the Warriors to repeat as region champs after this tough late-season loss at Cedar as SC fell a game behind both the Lady reds and the Falcons in the loss column going into the final week of games.

It was a bizarre game, with Cedar jumping out to a 6-0 lead early, but Snow Canyon roaring back to tie it at 6-6 with a run in the second and five more in top of the fourth inning. But a pair of costly errors opened the door for a huge six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth for the Lady reds, who seized the lead and never let go.

Javlyn Weaver homered twice and Sadie Leavitt also went yard for Cedar, which improved to 11-9 overall and 8-2 in region. The Reds play at Dixie Tuesday and at home vs. Hurricane Friday to close out the region season.

Snow Canyon, which got a triple and a homer from Sonja Hardy, have a region bye Tuesday and then close out Region 9 action at home vs. Desert Hills Friday afternoon.
