ST. GEORGE – It’s all about putting the fun into fitness when the Color Me Rad 5K sweeps through St. George on May 10. It is also about raising funds for Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah either by registering to run or volunteering to help with the event. Those registering face a Friday deadline for the current $42 rate. The rate will increase to $47 after Friday. Participants who register with the promo code HABITAT qualify for a discount on their registration fee and a portion of their fee will go to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah.

Color me Rad is a for-profit event that gives a portion of the proceeds of each race to a local charity, designated as Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah this year.

Habitat has a goal of an additional 1,000 participants for the race, according to its recent press release.  This ambitious goal will enable the local nonprofit organization to pay for up to 20 percent of new home construction for a deserving low-income family; or, through its “A Brush with Kindness” program, to replace five damaged roofs or complete 20 small projects, averaging about $500 each, including painting, landscaping, weatherizing or other minor repairs for local seniors or those living alone.

The Color Me Rad 5K, which takes place May 10 at Ridge Top Complex, 317 South Donlee Drive, in St. George, invites participants who aren’t necessarily trying to earn their best times but any who want to have a great time.

“We want our runners to have a ridiculous amount of fun,” race organizer Scott Crandall said. “This is your chance to get out of the box and have a great time while you’re getting fit.”

Runners start the race with a sparkling white T-shirt and by the time they cross the finish line they’ll look like a kindergarten art project.

Race finishers celebrate their accomplishment by throwing their own colored chalk into the air, creating an explosion of color inspired by the Holi Festival of India.

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah has built 19 new homes through volunteer labor and donations and has completed numerous repair and renovation projects in Washington County in its 16-year history.   Habitat homeowners purchase these houses through no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans.

Participants are encouraged to register at Color me Rad St. George Web page using promo code HABITAT to both receive a discount on registration fee and qualify their fee to proceed in part to the Habitat charity.

Volunteers are also needed and earn additional proceeds for Habitat through their participation. Those interested are asked to call the office of Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah at 435-674-7669 for information on volunteering at the event.
