ST. GEORGE – The chair of the Washington County Democratic Party resigned Friday following her filing as a candidate for the Utah Legislature last week.
Dorothy Engelman, who has acted as the county chair of the political party for the last three years, filed to run for House District 74 on March 21.
Upon filing for candidacy at the Washington County Clerk’s Office, Engelman told St. George News she had already resigned from other positions, yet intended to remain on as the Democratic Party’s county chair, albeit in a reduced capacity. However, upon further consideration this is no longer the case.
In an email sent to party members earlier this week, Engelman wrote:
When I filed to run as the Democratic candidate for HD74, I envisioned running a vigorous campaign while still directing the operations of the local Democratic Party. Upon further consideration and consultation; I made the decision to resign to concentrate on my campaign. My resignation is effective at noon on Friday, March 28, 2014.
The Washington County Democratic Party has evolved during the past three years and it’s fitting to take stock of how far it’s come. A heartfelt thank you to all who have made these changes possible; I didn’t do it alone!
She also touted the growth of the Washington County Democratic Party in recent years, individuals who have stepped by to run for office on the Democratic ticket, as well as the creation of new local groups, such as the Women’s Democratic Club of Southern Utah, Conversation Over Easy, and Talk & Tapas. Each group promotes discussion and social activities around political topics, Engelman said.
The selection of a new county party chair will take place at the Washington County Democratic Convention at 6:30 p.m, April 11, at Fossil Ridge Intermediate School at 383 S. Mall Drive in St. George.
Individuals wishing to be nominated should respond to party secretary Randy Thomson at [email protected] by April 10.
