David R. Green, Sr.

Green, David obit(September 19, 1932 – March 11, 2014)

David Rhodes Green, Sr. age 81, passed away March 11, 2014 in ST. George, Utah due to heart disease. He was born September 19, 1932 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Ben O. and Ada A. Green. The family moved to Southern California in 1943 where David graduated from Santa Barbara High School.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 during the Korean conflict and served as a Navy journalist. He married Carolyn Beebe in 1953, they later divorced. He graduated from Cal Poly, San Louis Obispo, California in 1959 with a degree in journalism.

He spent the next 40 years in the insurance industry where he worked for several large insurance companies in various management positions in California, Arizona and Utah. He retired in Salt Lake City in 1995 and moved to St. George, Utah. He married Canda Freland-Green in Las Vegas, Nevada and they have been together for nineteen years.

A convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David was an active member serving in many capacities including Bishop’s counselor and Stake Missionary. He especially enjoyed his home teaching assignment in the Snow Canyon 6th and 13th Wards.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Ada and brother Ted S. Green.

He is survived by his wife, Canda and five children from his previous marriage, Kathy (Scott) of Salt Lake City, UT; Carole (Terry) of Salt Lake City, UT; Shari (Scott), St. George, UT; David Jr. (Leah) of Salt Lake City, UT; Sara (Steve) of Greensborro, NC; and two sisters, Lucy (John) of Atascadero, CA and Virginia (Monty) of Reno, NV; 19 beloved grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT.
  • Viewings will be Friday, March 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary and on Saturday, March 15 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services.
  • Interment will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery with full military honors.
