Joanne McLaren Hancock

Joanne McLaren Hancock age 82 left her earthly life behind on February 5, 2014.  She was born October 3, 1931 to John Henry McLaren Jr. and Dorothy Cameron McLaren in Salt Lake City Utah. She married her eternal companion, Jay Juul Hancock on April 18, 1958 in the Salt Lake City Temple.  Joanne was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She loved the gospel and served in many church positions. She served as the Spiritual Living teacher for many many years. She served a mission for the church in the Texas/Louisiana Mission.  As a child she lived in Salt Lake City UT, San Francisco CA, Fresno Ca and Cedar City UT where she graduated from Cedar High. The family moved to Orem Utah where she lived and earned her Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University. After marrying they made their home in Provo UT.  She worked as the executive secretary for the head of Geneva Steel until she could no longer hide her pregnancy with her first child. The family moved to Sacramento Ca to find the best schooling for their second child who was deaf. Joanne spent much of her life as a homemaker occasionally taking in typing and later daycare to supplement the family income. Later she went back to work as an administrative assistant until she retired in 2000. She moved to St George Ut in 2001.

Joanne had a love of camping and enjoyed many trips to the ocean and the redwoods with her family. Her favorite spot was Patricks Point State Park in Northern California near the Oregon border. She spent countless hours on the beach with her husband searching for agates. Joanne was an avid reader and was almost never without a book nearby. Mom and Dad had a dream to go on an Alaskan cruise. That dream was cut short with the passing of Dad in 1999. She did, however, go on her final vacation and cruise the Western Caribbean with one of her girls. A trip that meant the world to her.  Joanne is survived by her children Karen Fuller of St George UT, Kaye Hancock Edwards of Highland Ranch CO, Nancy Bailey (Mark) of St George, UT, Jill Johns (Marty) of Colfax, CA, and Paul Hancock (Candice) of Washington UT. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.  She is preceded in death by husband Jay, daughter Cheryl, parents John and Dorothy McLaren and brother J, David McLaren.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Snow Canyon 6th Ward building located at 1610 N. Dixie Downs Rd.
  • There will be a viewing 1 hour prior to the service for friends and family to call.
  • Internment will take place Thursday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Orem City Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Heideman Hughes Mortuary, 435-674-5000, 1037 E. 700 S. St. George, Utah.
