League-leader Kordan Nielson lifts Cedar over Hurricane

CEDAR CITY — He’s having a whale of a year and it just keeps getting better.

cedar-smhurricane-smDespite playing limited second-half minutes in a huge blowout, Cedar senior Kordan Nielson scored 18 points and led the Redmen to a 51-38 victory over the Hurricane Tigers Wednesday night at CHS. Nielson, who leads the region in scoring at 17.8 per game, has scored at least nine points in every contest this season and has topped the 20-point plateau seven times. Not bad for a guy who didn’t even play varsity until his junior season and only averaged eight points a game last year. He has 32 3-pointers to lead the region as well this season.

Cedar rushed out to an early lead and never looked back in this contest, opening up a 26-11 lead by halftime. The Redmen allowed Hurricane just four points in the pivotal second quarter, outscoring the Tigers by a dozen.

Dustin Staggs dominated inside, while Nielson and Kyle Wood hit long balls to loosen up the Hurricane defense.

The Redmen extended the lead to 44-19 heading into the fourth quarter and coach Craig Cardon emptied his bench. Eleven different Cedar players scored by the end of the game.

It was an important win for the Redmen, who pull to within a game and a half of first place with Pine View’s loss to Canyon View Wednesday night. The Redmen, 11-7 overall and 6-3 in region, host the 8-2 Panthers Friday night. Snow Canyon, 7-2, plays at Cedar next Wednesday.

Staggs had 8 points and 8 rebounds for the Redmen and Weston Bettridge added 6 points and 6 boards.

Hurricane, which fell to 5-15 and 1-9, got 12 points from Cody LeBaron and 8 from James Bennion. The Tigers play at home vs. Snow Canyon Friday night, then take next Wednesday off before a valentine’s Day match-up with Canyon View in the Tiger’s Den.
