ST. GEORGE – Many kids had red noses from the cold, but huge grins as they rode their bicycles in the Tuff Kids Criterium Bike Race on Saturday at the former St. George Municipal Airport, 620 South Airport Road. Helmets featuring mohawks down the back, bikes with sparkled streamers and even a batman cape were seen on the riders, all under the age of 13.
Brooklyn Bassett, 4, proudly showed her bike. “It is purple and it’s pink,” Brooklyn said. “I rode my bike around two times!” In preparation for the race Brooklyn said she woke up early and put on cute clothes, including her sweatshirt with a sparkle butterfly on the front.
The races were completed in heats, as the children were grouped by type of bicycle: from power wheels to big wheels, and age group. Every child received a special bell, Frisbee or water bottle, t-shirt and snacks and chocolate milk after finishing.
As they waited for the rest of their friends to participate, there were cones to practice quick turning, plenty of open space on the airport grounds and even a small ramp.
Age divisions included 10-12, 8-9, 6-7, 4-5 and three and under.
