RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Dixie State Red Storm suffered their second loss of the season Saturday night, falling to undefeated California Baptist 100-90.
Dixie kept with CBU early drawing to a 13-13 tie after eight minutes. The Lancers then shot lights out, hitting 52 percent of their long distance threes, culminating with a half-court shot at the buzzer by Ryan Berg to put the Lancers up 53-33 at the half. Berg had 27 points at halftime, hitting 8 of 9 from beyond the arc.
The Lancers were able to match Dixie State’s offense over the first 10 minutes of the second half and, with 9:33 to play, the CBU lead remained at 20 points, 76-56.
The Red Storm began to chip away at the lead from that point and cut the lead to eight on a three-point play by DeQuan Thompson, 94-86, with 1:38 to play. But it was too little, too late as the Red Storm could get no closer. Cal Baptist closed out with a 6-4 run for the final margin.
Berg led all scorers with 34. Also finishing in double-figures for CBU were Ivan Patterson (23), Anthony Consentino (15), Chris Brown (12) and Michael Smith (10).
Leading the Red Storm was Thompson with 19. Joining him in double-figures were Kimball Payne with 14, Mason Sawyer with 13 and Zach Robbins with 12.
The Lancers remain undefeated at 15-0 overall and 9-0 in Pac West play. The Red Storm drop to 13-2 and 7-2 in conference. DSU now travels to Azusa Pacific Monday night for its rematch against Cougars.
