WASHINGTON CITY – Firefighters struggled for over an hour to rescue a dog trapped in a drainage pipe in Washington Fields on Wednesday afternoon.

A call came in to Washington City Fire Department around 11:35 a.m., after a 3-year-old dog named Lily crawled into a pipe on the owner’s property and got stuck, Washington City Firefighter Harris said.

After their unsuccessful first attempts to free Lily by using a long-coiled pipe, Lily’s owner and the firefighters decided to cut the drain pipe. Firefighters grabbed their shovels and began digging to uncover the pipe.

“It’s OK, Lily. Come on Lily,” Max Miner, one of the dog’s owners, called out to Lily in his small voice in attempt to comfort her.

Once the pipe was uncovered and cut, firefighters were able to reach Lily and pull her free. The dog was frightened and a little dirty but otherwise safe and uninjured.

“She better have learned a lesson by going in there,” Max Miner said about the ordeal.

So grateful our counties fire departments have shown a willingness to rescue pets. Many fire departments actually have policies in place that they will not divert man power to rescue animals.
    Thank you!
