ST. GEORGE – The Snow Canyon Half Marathon, St. George’s second largest city race, took place Saturday morning with over 2,600 runners.
The marathon has hosted more and more runners each year, said Aaron Metler Director of Races for the City of St. George. The first year only had 500 participants seven years ago and has been growing steadily ever since. This year’s race is up 600 runners over last year’s, Melter said.
“It’s been growing every year,” Metler said. “It’s been pretty cool.”

Jack Gindi, of California, signed up for the Snow Canyon Half Marathon after he saw it in Runner’s World magazine. Likewise, the St. George Races website mentioned the race was rated one of North America’s best half marathons by Runner’s Magazine – it’s obvious the race has drastically risen in popularity since its inception.
Matt Poulsen, of Lehi, Utah, took first place this year with a time of 1 hour 7 minutes, while Amber Green, a St. George native, took first in the womens division at 1 hour 17 minutes.
“I’ve ran a lot of Utah marathons, and Boston, and San Diego, two other ones,” Green said. “(Snow Canyon is) the best though. Lots of downhill and it’s gorgeous.”
It’s no wonder this race has become so popular with Southern Utah’s mild climate, Snow Canyon’s scenic views, and the fun downhill course.
All of St. George’s races, with race results, can be found on the St. George Races website.
