Cedar gets road win at Payson, clinches fifth seed

The Cedar Redmen bounced back from a blowout loss last week to beat Payson 14-6 Friday night.

The win clinches the fifth seed for the playoffs for CHS, while Payson ends its first season competing with the southern Utah schools in the 3AA South Region 0-6 in league play and 1-9 overall.

Payson QB Easton Smith, battling through a knee injury, led the Lions on a long drive before halftime to make it 14-6. The TD came on a scoring strike from 31 yards out from Smith to Preston Little.

Neither team could get it into the end zone in the second half. The Redmen, who allowed just 19 points a game this season, held an opponent under eight points for the fourth time in 2013.

Cedar will hit the road in the first round of the playoffs and may have to battle cold weather as the Redmen will play at Park City. Time and day is yet to be determined. The state’s default time is Saturday at 1 p.m., unless both coaches agree to schedule it another time. Many teams will try to keep the game to the usual Friday night time slot.

Park City, 52-7 losers Friday night to Juan Diego, went 3-3 in the 3AA North Region and is 3-7 overall. The Miners allow 34.1 points per game.
