ST. GEORGE – This week in Dixie State sports saw the football team lose a close one on the road. The volleyball team rebounded from a disastrous week last week with a win at home to keep pace in the conference. The womens’ soccer team continues to play well atop the Pacific West standings. The men’s soccer team lost a tough one on the road. Here’s the recap:
FOOTBALL
The Red Storm lost a heartbreaker on a field goal in the waning seconds to Central Washington, 27-24. DSU led most of the game and put points up on the board against the GNAC’s top defense. But CWU, as it has managed to 
do all season, capitalized on mistakes. The Wildcats held DSU when it counted and eked out a win. Griff Robles completed 23 of 43 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns. All-american tight end Joe Don Duncan caught a touchdown pass for the sixth consecutive game. He caught seven passes for 150 yards. Wide receiver Mitch Frei had six receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown. Running back Myles Burton had 106 yards rushing on 14 carries. Defensively, Jake Duncan became Dixie State’s all-time Division-II leader in tackles, passing former Rebel standout Teddy Owens. Duncan had 16 stops to bring his two-season total to 213. DSU plays a home game tomorrow at 6 p.m. vs. Western Oregon. The Wolves beat the Red Storm 51-32 last month in Monmouth, Ore.
VOLLEYBALL
Dixie State’s volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak, defeating Notre Dame de Namur in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18, 25-13 at home this past Monday. Maddie Rex and Nicole Koehler led the team with 11 kills apiece. Setter Shelby Sorenson led the team with 25 assists. “We executed very well tonight,” said Dixie head coach Robyn Felder. “It was nice to see us do the small things tonight.” Defensively, Pauline VonDinklage led with three blocks. Alex Anderson led the team with 12 digs and Rex added 10. Dixie State will host Holy Names this Saturday for an afternoon match at noon.
MEN’S SOCCER
Nadav Elimelech scored his second goal in as many matches, but the Dixie State men’s soccer team suffered its third defeat in the last four matches this past Monday. The loss to Academy of Art, 4-1, capped off a short two-match swing to the Bay Area. The loss dropped Dixie State to 2-7-3 on the season and 1-6-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Elimelech put the Red Storm up 1-0 in the 24th minute with a six-yard shot off a Kris Evans assist. The lead would only hold for 10 minutes until the Urban Knights found the equalizer in the 34th minute. ART U (7-4-1/4-2-1 PacWest) scored again four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Two more goals early in the second half ballooned the Urban Knight lead to 4-1. Dixie State had five corner kicks in the second half, but only had five shot opportunities over the final 45 minutes. Art U won the overall shot battle in the match, 19-14. David Stirland paced the Storm with four shots and Elimelech added three. The Red Storm hosts Azusa Pacific this Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
This past Monday at Crocker Amazon Park, the Dixie State women’s soccer team needed extra time to defeat Academy of Art University 2-1 in Pacific West Conference play. Ashley Wade tied the score at 1-1 midway through the second half on an assist from Megan Marchbanks. Jennifer Mason sealed the deal with the game-winner in the second overtime. Mason was assisted on a short cross from Kimberly Thurman. Dixie State out-shot the Urban Knights 23 to 11. The Red Storm improves to 6-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the PacWest after a pair of road victories this past weekend. The Red Storm returns home for a pair of PacWest matches over the next two Saturdays. This week they will host Azusa Pacific at 10 a.m.
