IVINS – In an act of artistic ambush, a group of about 30 Kayenta gallery owners, and local residents performed a surprise, meticulously choreographed, dance yesterday at the ongoing Art in Kayenta Festival.
Around noon, the festival visitors stopped in their tracks in amazement as the planned “flash mob” took place before their eyes.
This “flash mob” concept is based on a widespread sensation that has been repeatedly documented on YouTube. A flash mob, typically happens at a public gathering, where large groups of dancers disguised as the common public, spontaneously break into a grande choreographed dance; flash mobs have come in the singing and orchestral variety as well.
The Kayenta flash mob occurred at the Coyote Gulch Art village when the disguised dancers started simultaneously snapping as the song “Vogue” came over the speakers. The snapping progressed into a seamlessly choreographed dance that lasted through the entire song. After the dance ended, the flash mob dancers quickly scattered back into public.
“I didn’t know my body could still move like that,” Ivins resident and flash mobber Gayle Bray said.
They secretly have been practicing the dance with choreographers for weeks, she said. “I figured, why not? It would be a fun way to celebrate and be part of this year’s festival.”
The Art in Kayenta Festival is put on by the Kayenta Arts Foundation, providing a get together for artists and a palette of many mediums of art for the public to enjoy. It continues today until 5 p.m. at the Coyote Gulch Art village.
The entertainers this afternoon include bagpipe player, Gareth Houston-McMillan, and folk/rock band Beans and Wheels.

That last guy was with the Bawhami Belly Dance troupe that did a flash mob yesterday also. It was an American Tribal Style belly dance flash mob (which was done around the country yesterday). 🙂
OH NO! They are MOBBING in Ivins! Oh my, what will we do? WHAT WILL WE DO! Call the cops, call the state troopers, call the national guard! They are ruining our beautiful town of Kayenta! Oh, woe is us, woe is us!
All kidding aside, way to go folks, I’m really sorry I wasn’t there to see it! Wish we could have more of this type of “spontaneous mob action!”:D
