ST. GEORGE – There was an afternoon of accidents in the St. George area Thursday as accidents occurred on River Road, Red Cliffs Drive, and Interstate 15 within a two-hour span.
The first accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of 700 South and River Road. St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said an SUV was traveling northbound though the intersection and attempted to make a left turn. At the same time a KIA passenger car was traveling southbound through the intersection and hit the SUV.
Despain said the two people in the SUV were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one in the KIA was harmed. The driver of the SUV was cited for not yielding to oncoming traffic on a left turn.
A similar situation took place at 263 Red Cliffs Drive in front of Red Lobster around 3:30 p.m., Despain said. In this incident a Mazda passenger car was leaving the Zion Factory Stores parking lot and also attempting to make a left turn, pulling out in front of a Ford passenger car while doing so.
No injuries were reported in the resulting collision. The Mazda driver was also cited for not yielding to oncoming traffic.
Both accidents temporarily impacted traffic flow in the area.
While St. George Police and other agencies were handling the Red Cliffs Drive crash, the Utah Highway Patrol was responding to an accident at mile post 1 of northbound I-15.
UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said the said a rear-end collision had occurred at mile post 1 and that some minor injuries had been reported. He was unable to confirm any additional details.
The Utah Department of Transportation’s @UDOTTRAFFIC twitter feed reported that the incident had reduced traffic to a single-lane. All lanes were reported open again by 4:30 p.m.

It’s good to hear people are getting into accidents more. That means more people in this psycho town can learn some of the simplest and most basic lessons life has to offer them (in mercy). Sigh. And oh, how about being constrained to a wheelchair for life. Oops, did I really say that??
More accidents in this town in the last year than I can remember EVER…but especially since the summer! Wonder just how many are because drivers are texting and/or talking on their cell phones??????
The intersection of 7th and River Rd needs upgraded to have either solid green/red left tun arrows or the new flashing yellow ones. Why does the city not see this as an outdated signal for that high-accident intersection?
