Unique race challenges adult, youth athletes; Kokopelli Triathlon at Sand Hollow

HURRICANE — The Kokopelli Triathlon will return to test Southern Utah’s finest athletes at Sand Hollow State Park this Saturday. The challenging course and scenic landscape are sure to impress both competitors and spectators.

The triathlon features three courses to suit different athletic levels:

  • The Olympic course, with a 1,500-meter swim, 20.4-mile bike ride and 10K run
  • The sprint course, with a 750-meter swim, 12.4-mile bike ride and 5K run
  • The kids’ course, with a 100-meter swim, two-mile bike ride, and one-mile run

Adult competitors can choose between the sprint and Olympic courses, while only youth can participate in the kids’ course. Food, refreshments and race assistance will be provided by a courteous volunteer team. Those who reach the finish line will receive a medal and gift bag, among other prizes.

Online registration is available until midnight on Thursday. Late registration, if space allows, and packet pick-up will be open from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at the Holiday Inn Express in Washington City.

Both spectators and competitors, with the exception of those who are handicapped or have special medical needs, will be required to leave their cars outside the park on Sand Hollow Road.  Shuttles will begin running to and from the transition area at 7 a.m. The race will last from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., including the awards ceremony and raffle drawing.

Additional details are available on the race website.

The triathlon is sponsored by BBSC Endurance Sports, also the host of numerous other athletic events throughout Utah and Nevada, including the SG Tri, RAGE and Pumpkinman. The group was founded in 2003.
