LAS VEGAS — An early pick-six by Jeremiah Ieremiah gave the Tigers a spark, but it wasn’t enough as Hurricane fell to Legacy, Nev., 34-14 Saturday night.
The early defensive TD tied the game put Hurricane ahead 7-0, but Legacy return man DeMichael Walker returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to tie the game just seconds later. Hurricane couldn’t manage much offense the rest of the way. The Tigers fell to 0-3 with the loss. Hurricane started last season with seven straight wins and had an overall winning streak of 20 games. It took Desert Hills’ triple overtime victory to break the streak. Since then, the Tigers are 2-4, including last season’s 38-0 loss to Juan Diego in the second round of the 2012 playoffs.
Legacy scored a second touchdown on a 46-yard run by Casey Hughes just before halftime to take a 14-7 lead at the break. The Longhorns then added a pair of touchdowns behind powerful running back Hughes and the speedy Walker to put the game on ice with a 28-7 lead. Both teams tallied scores in the fourth quarter.
Hurricane was out-gained 480-201 in total yards, with Hughes leading the way 189 yards on 15 carries.
The Tigers haven’t started 0-3 since 2004, head coach Chris Homer’s second season. In that season, Hurricane’s only win came against Canyon View.
The Tigers play at Payson next Friday in the 3AA South Region opener.
Legacy, the No. 6-tanked team in Nevada’s top classification, is now 1-0 on the season.
