Lee opposes intervention in Syrian civil war

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Mike Lee released the following statement in opposition to U.S. military action in Syria:

“The administration has indicated its goal is to use limited military action to significantly degrade Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s ability to use chemical weapons against his own people and to deter future attacks.  After hearing from the Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in a top-secret briefing, I do not believe that the range of options the president is considering will accomplish this military objective, and therefore I cannot now support intervention into the Syrian civil war.

“First, it remains unclear how the president’s plan to execute limited strikes would prevent Assad from using chemical weapons again or even make it less likely.  Second, it is entirely possible that ineffective U.S. strikes would embolden Assad to become even more ruthless towards his people.

“Finally, I am greatly concerned that in order to achieve the president’s goal, the U.S. would be required to become much more deeply involved in the Syrian civil war than the administration is willing to commit.   The real threat to U.S. credibility is not what happens if we don’t intervene, but what happens if we do without a plan for what comes next.

“The risks of the president’s strategy far outweigh the possible gains.  We cannot ask our men and women in uniform to engage in a military conflict that does not present a national security threat to the United States.  Instead, the U. S. should work vigorously to identify and neutralize any real threats to our national security – such as the proliferation of chemical weapons.  We must work to ensure that chemical weapons in Syria do not get into the hands of groups that will use them against American or western targets.”

So, it is not a national threat to the United States that they have chemical weapons in Syria. So how does Mike think we can keep them out of the hands of the “groups” that target the US. He is just talk but has no solution. I am not pro war, but we have to show that we do everything to protect our country.

Your comment is udderly ridiculous! The chemical weapons are being used on their own people, explain to me how a chemical weapon would be of any threat to us? We need to stay OUT of the world’s problems and quit justifying war with corrupt, greedy motives for once!

Dropping a few billion dollars worth of missiles is not likely going to change that much. Worse it will hurt as many of the wrong people as the right ones. I’m for not giving this incompetent president anything. If he really though this was in the USA’s interest he should have done it already. He’s just playing games. He does not need congress anyway.

Just a suggestion for people who support intervention….you all can get the goal accomplished much quicker if you volunteer to be dropped off over there and do the deed yourselves. Seems so convenient for the supporters to be for a cause when someone else other than themselves will wind up dead or missing limbs etc..

Mikey is nothing but tea… blowhard. His “press release” has nothing to do with Syrian intervention. He is all about opposing anything the duly elected black Democratic President tries to do. If President Obama took a pacifist, isolationist approach to any intervention in Syria, Mikey would be all over that too.

Let’s just hope Mike Lee will be a one-term senator.

I agree with Senator Lee. Anything our “ILLEGAL PRESIDENT’ wants should be opposed. This “Illegal President” just wants to assist his Muslim Brothers. Just like his gun running in Benghazi.
