Game Preview Capsule: Orem at Pine View

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Orem (0-1, 0-0) at Pine View (1-0, 0-0)
Previous Meeting – Pine View 24, Orem 21 (Aug. 24, 2012, at Orem)
Broadcast: STGNews LIVE video stream, plus Baja Ch. 22 and 106.1 FM.

PANTHERS
Pine-view-smClassification: 3AA, South Region
Coach: Ray Hosner (13th year, 102-37 overall)
Offense: Spread
Last game: Beat Judge Memorial 38-24
Players to watch: QB Kody Wilstead threw for 411 yards, 333 of which went to Jack Bangerter and Colton Miller. The Panthers also rushed for over 100 yards, with Tristan Duran getting the most carries. The spotlight will also be on CBs Jaden Ah Quin and Duran, plus safeties Bangerter, Miller and Dylan Draper.
PPG: 38.0
PAPG: 24.0
Trend: Pine View offensive coordinator Scott Anderson is smart enough to make sure the running game is part of the Panthers game plan and it may be a key factor this week. Orem is razor sharp passing the ball, so a time-slurping running game may be a big factor. Last week Duran and Justice Santiago combined for 20 carries and 128 yards. Still, that PV passing game is scary good.

TIGERS
orem-smClassification: 4A, Region 7
Coach: Tyler Anderson (3rd year, 13-11 overall)
Offense: Spread
Last game: Lost to Pleasant Grove 52-28
Players to watch: New quarterback Tucker Camp (his brother, Taylor, was the QB last season) had a smashing debut, passing for 351 yards and three TDs. With stud receivers Nolan Gray and Parker Overly, both of whom are over six feet tall, Camp knows sometimes it’s just a matter of throwing the ball up there and letting those guys go get it. Gray led the state in receiving last year with more than 1,500 yards and 17 TDs.
PPG: 28.0
PAPG: 52.0
Trend: It’s no shame to lose to 5A Pleasant Grove, especially when breaking in a new quarterback. But the 52-28 score belies the fact that the Vikings led 45-7 going into the fourth quarter. PG had 500 yards of offense on Orem and that’s with the JV playing the fourth quarter. The Tigers need some kind of running game to create a little balance. Last week they averaged 1.3 yards per rush on 23 attempts.

GAME OUTLOOK
Like touchdowns? This will be the game to watch as PV scoreboard operator Gary Higgins may get finger cramps by the final gun. Then again, our guess is that Pine View will try to run the ball a little more and hopefully burn some clock. Pine View could use Pano Tiatia, who is headed to the Ukraine to fight for Team USA. Perhaps Duran or Santiago will go off. Last season, Prentiss Miller rushed for 270 yards on 51 (!) carries against Orem. The Panthers DBs should get a workout as well, but they have a plethora of experience. We’ll put the over/under at 65, with the last team with the ball getting the win.

STGnews (record) PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (6-1) — Pine View
Darren Cole (5-2) — Pine View
