Home electronics meet design in man-to-machine interface: Reel Home Entertainment

ST. GEORGE – With more than 30 years of experience in his industry, Glenn Thomas of Reel Home Entertainment knows what it takes to build a personalized entertainment system. And for his customers, this means having access to the highest degree of quality entertainment with the simplicity of one easy-to-use remote control.

Specializing in professional grade home audio and video systems, Thomas said two things set him apart from other local electronics stores: First, his inventory. And second, his devotion to customers.

“As a company, we have a unique customer service goal,” Thomas said. “Each day, our goal is to serve one customer. This is how we keep our focus on designing completely personalized systems and making sure we provide the quality and attention our customers deserve.”

Unique in its inventory, Reel Home Entertainment stocks professional-grade residential audio and video equipment that cannot be found in local stores. “Our warehouse is located in a temperature-controlled, high-security facility,” Thomas said. “Not only do we stock more cables than any store in town, we also keep the latest in home entertainment technologies, including products featured in commercial and trade-specific magazines.”

Reel Home Entertainment also has the largest professional installation and service van in Southern Utah. “Having a mobile warehouse like this allows us to bring a fully-stocked store to each client’s home,” Thomas said. “We can carry with us everything we could possibly need to complete each job.”

To Thomas and his customers, “this means no time is wasted running back and forth for supplies, or waiting on parts orders that can often delay a job,” he said.

Through his acumen for design and engineering, Thomas takes new technology in home audio and video systems and incorporates the latest in computer and streaming capabilities.

“One of our most enjoyable tasks is creating sustainable home streaming systems,” he said. “It is really neat to see how computers and home theater systems can integrate to provide smooth, real-time streaming experiences, and how technology can be updated to keep our customers at the forefront of technology trends.”

As sophisticated as systems can be, Thomas said it is important to make it simple for his customers to respond to technology.

“Rather than leaving them with a pile of remote controls to sort through and figure out,” he said, “we design a system that allows users to do everything they want to do, with one remote and the push of one or two buttons.”

For employees of Reel Home Entertainment, it is a challenge and a privilege to design, install, program, calibrate, and do everything necessary to set up custom home entertainment systems. Often, such systems include whole-house iPad-controlled music networks, flat panel TV mounting, in-wall and in-ceiling speaker installation, and fast, reliable and hard-wired home network systems for Internet streaming of high definition, or HD, video and surround sound, and more.

“This is called creating an ‘ultra smart remote system’ that interfaces easily between the user and a complex system of machines and technologies,” Thomas said.

As a student at State University of New York, Thomas specialized in human-factors engineering, ergonomics and man-to-machine interface. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and began working in home theater system development and installation and started his own business. He moved both his business and family to St. George 10 years ago where, he said, he has fallen in love with the weather and the community.

“We really enjoy our customers here,” Thomas said. “Every day we look forward to meeting and working with someone new.”

With each new customer comes the new challenge of creating a system that is unique and specific to a customer’s needs.

“Each system we create is just as unique and individual as each customer,” Thomas said. “No two systems are alike.”

Thomas has been interested in electronics since childhood, he said. After learning to build radios at age 9, he converted his bedroom to an electrical bench. Then, in high school, he enrolled in as many electronics courses as were available to him.

“This really is something I have always loved to do,” Thomas said. “All throughout my career I have taken pride in doing the best job that can be done, and in doing it right the first time.”

His greatest satisfaction, Thomas said, is creating a system that offers “great sound, great picture, and one that is easy to use.”
