LA VERKIN – Around 4:09 this afternoon, firefighters responded to reports of a hillside on fire in La Verkin, near the corner of 300 South and Main Street.

No injuries were reported, Hurricane Fire Chief Tom Kuhlmann said, and he expected the fire to be put out by night’s end.

By 6:30 p.m., firefighters had defended the immediate area surrounding nearby houses and the blaze appeared to be limited to the top of a nearby hill.

The fire started in a backyard chicken-coop, neighboring residents Will White and Michaela Francis said. White and Francis said they believed the fire was started by a child playing in or around the coop, however Chief Kuhlmann could not comment on the specific cause, as the matter is currently under investigation.

Multiple agencies responded to the blaze, including 10 engines, three tenders, two command units, and one medical unit.

The exact acreage of the fire was unknown at the time of this report.

“No one has walked it off or measured it yet,” Kuhlmann said. The only structural damage was to the chicken-coop, he said, which was completely consumed by the fire.
