ST. GEORGE – Fire crews responded to a vehicle fire call Tuesday when an SUV with smoke billowing out from under its hood pulled into a hotel parking lot.

Smoke began to appear from under the hood of an Isuzu Trooper while traveling down Riverside Drive around 4 p.m. The driver pulled the SUV into the parking lot of the Comfort Inn at 130 E Riverside Dr. where he and his passenger evacuated the vehicle.

Comfort Inn employees attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers, St. George Fire Capt. Coty Chadburn said, but it was little help. Two fire engines arrived at the scene soon after and the fire was put out by 4:20 p.m. Chadburn said the cause of the engine fire is unclear, though the driver had indicated there may have been some trouble with the transmission before the fire ignited.

The Isuzu’s driver and passenger were unharmed in the incident.
