CEDAR CITY – On July 21, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Officer Jason Thomas of the Cedar City Police Department was called in reference to a disorderly subject. He located 30-year-old Logan Maxwell Sawyer, whose actions led Thomas to believe he was under the influence of drugs. Preliminary tests and statements confirmed this suspicion and Sawyer was arrested.
Sawyer was being medically cleared at Valley View Medical Center before booking into the Iron County Correctional Facility. Thomas removed Sawyer’s handcuffs temporarily to assist with the process and he began attacking both the officer and hospital staff.
Thomas quickly responded to the assault by trying to gain control over Sawyer. Sawyer was able to strike, kick and bite the officer and at one point attempted to obtain his weapon. Thomas was finally able to successfully gain control over him.
During the incident, Thomas sustained contusions and abrasions along with a moderate concussion. He is recovering at home and expected return to work next week. A 15-year veteran of the Cedar City Police Department, Thomas was also seriously injured during a 2007 shooting incident.
Sawyer was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, intoxication, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and assault on a health care professional and felony charges of attempting to disarm a police officer, possession of methamphetamine and assault on a police officer.
“Police acknowledge their profession is a dangerous one, but assaulting a police officer is a crime that should not be tolerated,” Cedar City Police Sgt. Jimmy Roden said.
