ST. GEORGE – St. George Fire Department responded to a structure fire call that came into St. George Communications Center at 6:25 p.m. today. The dispatch center said that an abandoned building was on fire at 35 North 730 East in St. George.
The property turned out to be a series of old storage units behind the Chalet Motel, one of which was on fire.
The motel’s property manager, Tim Connor, said the units are owned by Sue Cox and that he helps Cox manage the units. One of the units is rented out to the motel, Connor said.
The burning unit contained little else than a collection of metal racks and cardboard boxes.
The incident was a “room and content fire with minor structural damage that was confined to the room of origin,” St. George Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Taylor said. He estimated that the damage would run between $1,000 and $1,500 to repair.
“I’m not condemning it,” Taylor said.
But Connor said the entire building would most likely be torn down in the wake of the incident.
Taylor said that the cause of the fire was under investigation and offered no further comment.
Connor, however, said that there was nothing in the unit that could have started the fire, and that it must have been the work of an arsonist. He said that he had had some trouble from a group of boys in the neighborhood, whose ages he estimated to be about 10.
Nobody was injured in connection with the fire.
