Unattended campfires cause small brush fire in Washington

WASHINGTON CITY – The Washington City Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire located off Washington Parkway, Interstate 15’s exit 13, at approximately 1:45 p.m. today.

The fire was a small brush fire  caused by two-three different unattended campfires, Fire Chief Brent Hafen said. They were able to catch the fire early before it spread.

“It was either some homeless people or kids playing around,” Hafen said, but no witnesses were found to connect any people to the fire.

Overall, Hafen said he feels positive about the responsibility citizens have taken for fire prevention this year, and fires have been less frequent this summer than last.

“We haven’t had many human-caused fires this year so far,” he said, “even on the Fourth of July and after.”
