Beware the elusive but oh-so-present Black Widow spider

ST. GEORGE – As much as summertime in Southern Utah deters some people and even pests for its dry heat, it offers a home for others that thrive in its environment – consider the Black Widow spider and its less-daunting peers in the pest-world, grasshoppers and roaches. These slight-sized intruders move into our homes and backyards uninvited, set up house and quickly multiply in numbers we often are oblivious to until they reach infestation levels.  Baird’s Pest Control, based in Washington, has been ousting these unwanted house guests for 29 years throughout Southern Utah.

Founded in 1981 by Mariel Baird, Baird’s Pest Control is a St George exterminator company and is family owned and operated business that offers more than 50 years of collective experience among its owners and staff and is well established as an integral part of the Southern Utah community. The company only uses products approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and Utah state regulations.

The German Cockroach can be recognized by it’s tan or brown, or sometimes black color and has two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings.  It thrives in Southern Utah. The grasshopper varies in range and diversity; however, the Black Widow Spider is the most feared.

Facts about Black Widows

The black widow is the most troubling as their venom is 10 times stronger than that of a rattlesnake.

Because black widow spiders are nocturnal one won’t see the infestation, but they can be recognized by the erratic web they create and one may spot that in the day time. Black widows are the most exported spider across more than 5 continents because they attach to everything easily.

“We are finding black widow spiders in backyards and homes all over Southern Utah,” Jeff Baird said. “The most prominent locations are inside and underneath children’s play houses, rain gutters, swing sets, slides, and around the bases of homes where they live in the cracks of bricks.”

During warm months, such as summertime in Southern Utah, a black widow spider may lay up to two egg sacs containing anywhere from 100 to 1,000 eggs each. That’s a possibility of 2,000 a month.

When the eggs hatch they immediately begin to set up their webs and try to get away from their mother because she will eat them. The wind transports them well, and they crawl.

Our Solution

“Our goal is very simple,” Jeff Baird said, “we are here to make you happy and your home or business insect free.”

Baird’s experience with Southern Utah pests ranks them specialists in eradicating the common German Roach.

“We guarantee our services and we pride ourselves on being prompt and on time,” Jeff Baird said. “Safety and quality are most important to us and we have no hassle and no contracts.”

Choose Local

Southern Utah is unique in its diverse geography and weather.  In fact, Baird said that each Southern Utah community has its own unique challenges when it comes to pest control.  What works in Santa Clara may not be what a home or business owner needs in Washington or St. George.

“You need a local exterminator who understands each area’s pests and how to deal with them,” Jeff Baird said. “Baird Pest Control is that exterminator.  We have been serving the local communities since 1981 and we know what works.”

I use to work for a place in Phoenix called Phoenix Pest Control and we were told that if we couldn’t afford the services that you can use Agua Net Hairspray for these. It will paralyze their system and kills them. Of course they didn’t want to tell the customers that. But if I heard of someone that had a problem with black widows, I would tell them to go get that from Walgreen’s or where-ever. I never used that on my hair again though, lol.

I think the city should make all the black widow spiders move to exit 2 so we don’t have to deal with them anymore.

I heard that the black widow just has a bad reputation. It became a deadly spider because of the location of the spiders bite in past history. As a norm black widows were found in out houses and bit people in sensitive locations like on the anus. The poison would travel straight to the blood stream and kill the person bitten. This rarely happens anymore. People rarely die from the bite of a black widow. All spiders breath through their skin. Anything sprayed from a can could kill any spider. I might be wrong but I say this because I have killed many a spider with hair spray.

Hairspray does not kill them, it paralyzes them temporarily. Still, it helps you move in for the kill.
