ST. GEORGE – Members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and other motorcycle enthusiasts met for a region convention, Saturday. Pulling from six southwestern states, the region meet-up brought riders to St. George from as far away as California.

The main purpose of the convention is to provide classes to members as part of an ongoing effort to keep all riders up-to-date on safety, rules, bike maintenance, and even CPR. In addition to the education, events included custom bike competitions, motorcycle drill team routines, and industry vendors.

“We’re all about safety,” Public Relations Coordinator Dennie Long said. “I can’t stress safety enough.”

The groups known as the Gold Angels and the Arizona Precisions Motorcycle Drill Team demonstrated what they call precision riding with a flare. The hour-long performance included tight turns, riding in close formations with other bikes, taking on other passengers and timing maneuvers to weave through other performers.

Organizers of the event encourage community members to be involved in the association and enjoy the public performances.

“We love the public to come out and watch,” GWRRA Region Director Anita Alkire said. “Anyone is welcome to join the organization.”

Despite the precedent of other, more exclusive motorcycle clubs, the GWRRA claims members who ride other brands of motorcycles and some who don’t even ride at all. Although the association was founded on the top end Honda motorcycles, and contains many purists, others are welcome to join in on the mutual motorcycle enthusiasm.

“We practice every Sunday,” Gold Angels Drill Team Captain, Jerry Cowan, said. “We do this to perform in front of an audience, and we like to have as many people show up as possible.”

The convention will continue through Sunday, the riders will then head home. The next scheduled performance by the Gold Angels will be in Pendleton, Ore. in August.

Just a few corrections: There were two drill teams present, the Gold Angels was just one of them. The Arizona Gold Wing Motorcycle Drill Team was the other. Also, the Gold Angels will not be making the trip to Wing Ding this year. Our next performance will be in Pendleton, Oregon at the Region I convention the 2nd weekend in August.
