Youth beat boredom, learn life skills, earn merit badges at 4-H summer camps

ST. GEORGE – Every student looks forward to their summer vacation with high hopes of three months packed with fun and adventure.

4-H Aggie Adventures Day Camps are designed to appeal to a broad variety of interests and age groups. The focus of these camps ranges from cooking to robotics, sewing to shooting and everything in between. In addition to the life skills youth will learn, those in the Boy Scouts can also earn merit badges.

With all that is offered, youth are sure to find a camp that is a perfect fit and a guarantee of eliminating long summer hours of boredom. Registration for all camps in open but filling up fast. Field trips to several local businesses and government agencies will be included in each camp (parents who assist with field trips or camps can receive a discount off their registration.) “District 12” 4-H Survival Camp

Dates: June 3 to 6

Times: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: St. George

Ages: 9 to 14

Merit badges earned: Cooking, cinematography, textiles and archery

Description: Youth will put their survival skills to the test at this “Hunger Games-”inspired camp by learning how to cook in the outdoors, sew backpacks and clothing and make videos of their archery skills that they can show friends and family on YouTube.

4-H Maker Camp

Dates: June 10 to 13

Times: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: St. George

Ages: 12 to 18

Merit badges earned: N/A

Description: This unorthodox program is the camp of tomorrow, combining basic crafting principles with technology. Youth will make their own innovative headphones and speakers, and have the chance to explain the design process and show off the finished product in a YouTube video.

4-H Chef Extraordinaire Camp

Dates: June 24 to 27

Times: 9 a.m. to noon

Location: St. George

Ages: 8 to 14

Merit badges earned: N/A

Description: It is important to be healthy but still enjoy good food, and this camp will show youth how to do both. Hands-on lessons focusing on nutritional knowledge and healthy recipes will guide participants through how to use healthy foods in daily meals and fun treats that everyone can enjoy.

“Stark Manufacturing” 4-H Robotics Camp

Dates: July 8 to 11

Times: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: St. George

Ages: 9 to 14

Merit badges earned: Robotics, geocaching, geology and climbing

Description: Participants will discover what it takes to become a brilliant industrialist like Tony Stark (Iron Man.) Stark Industries is hiring tech scientists and engineers who will embark on daring quests for adventure, learning about physics and knots as they climb and rappel. They will also use GPS and mapping technology to find the parts needed to build prototype robots. This journey will teach youth to succeed by relying on their ingenuity and instincts.

“The Force” 4-H Robotics Camp

Dates: July 22 to 25

Times: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: St. George

Ages: 9 to 14

Merit badges earned: Engineering, inventing, cinematography and archery

Description: The Jedi High Council of Washington County has sensed a disturbance in the Force. The dark side is rising and young Padawans must develop their skills and become Jedi Knights to defeat the evil Sith Lord and his dark apprentices. At this camp, Padawans will learn to use the force and enhance their light-saber dueling skills. Once they advance to the rank of Jedi Knight, they will learn how to build and repair their own droid robots and navigate planetary star systems across the galaxy.
