Zion celebrates Earth Day, National Park Week with sustainability, resource-oriented events

ZION NATIONAL PARK – This week, Zion National Park will celebrate National Park Week with events and programs aimed at raising awareness of the importance of resource protection and sustainability.

On Saturday, the park will help the Town of Springdale celebrate the ninth annual Zion Canyon Earth Day Celebration. This event focuses on climate-friendly festivities and features local organizations and businesses that incorporate sustainable practices, promote land stewardship and participate in outdoor health and wellness. Zion National Park will host several booths highlighting park resources, including wildlife, vegetation, archaeology and the park’s many sustainable practices. The event takes place on the lawn of the Bit & Spur Restaurant at 1212 Zion Park Boulevard from noon to 5 p.m. All proceeds from this event benefit Springdale’s efforts to convert all public facilities to solar power.

In honor of National Park Week, the park will waive entrance fees Monday through Friday. During the week, the park will also expand its ranger programming to include morning shuttle talks and evening programs at the lodge and campground. Ranger-led talks and walks will also be offered. Visitors can go to the park website for more information.

The week will culminate with Zion Discovery Day on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located at the Zion Nature Center, the event will be sponsored by the Zion National Park Foundation, the park’s fundraising partner. It will focus on Zion, Cedar Breaks and Pipe Spring and all aspects of park management. Geared for all ages, the event will include traditional music, art demonstrations, children’s activities, and information on park resources. There will also be a series of silent auctions and a membership drive that will support the foundation. Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket to spread out on the lawn, along with a picnic lunch and a reusable water bottle.
