ST. GEORGE – A wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service in effect until midnight tonight for Utah’s Dixie and Zion National Park including the City of St. George, and for south-central Utah, Glen Canyon Recreation Area / Lake Powell, including the cities of Kanab, Escalante and Bullfrog.
• Winds: West-southwest winds increasing to 25-35 mph with gusts to 50 mph possible thoughout Utah’s Dixie, Zion National Park and St. George; and west-southwest winds of 20-30 mph with gusts to 45 mph in the extreme southern Utah area from Kanab in Kane County to the Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Recreation Area.
• Timing: Strong and gusty southwest winds will continue until late this evening. These winds will gradually diminish beginning around midnight.
• Impacts: High profile and lightweight vehicles will experience difficult travel conditions on all roadways through the advisory area this evening. Reduced visibilities may occur due to blowing sand and dust. Strong crosswinds are possible along Highway 89 in Kane County. Choppy waves are expected on Lake Powell.
• Precautionary/preparedness actions: A wind advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least 31 mph or gusts of 45 mph are expected.
Motorists in the advisory area should be prepared for sudden gusty crosswinds, which can make driving difficult.
Boaters, the strong winds will create dangerous boating conditions on area lakes. These winds will create very choppy water and generate large waves, which could capsize or swamp small craft. For your personal safety operators of small craft are urged to postpone their outings until the winds subside.
