Tossing paper planes to give Dixie State another world record; STGnews Videocast

ST. GEORGE – An attempt to set a new world record took place Thursday to give Dixie State University some fame and Make A Wish Foundation some fortune.

This is not the first time Dixie State and the Student Alumni Association would have broken a world record and likely won’t be the last. This has become a part of D-Week, a week dedicated to Dixie State University, its students and alumni.

Last year Dixie State broke the record for the world’s largest thumb war. Other records broken during previous D-Weeks include the world’s  largest arm wrestle and largest massage chain.

There were 560 people who threw paper airplanes at the event. Participants were given a free T-shirt and paper to fold into a paper airplane.

“Every one will make their own plane,” said Chet Norman, the director of student relations for the SAA. “It’s all custom designed, whatever they want, and they can fly their plane and it will be a lot of fun throwing them all at the same time.”

Norman said a lot of research had been done for the event and no prior records of a large amount of people throwing paper airplanes at the same time was found, so this may be the first attempt ever made that will be submitted for a world record.

For $1 each participant could buy a second piece of paper. Aside from attempting to set a new world record, the attempted record-setting plane-throw was also  a way to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation.

With that second paper airplane one would have a second chance at winning one of the prizes; an Apple iPad Mini or an Apple iPod Nano. Altogether $1,200 worth of prizes were given out.

Who could turn down a second chance for winning a prize in exchange for just $1 that goes to a good cause?

CORRECTION MADE 10:55 a.m:  The number participating has been corrected to 560 from 170, per Chet Norman, director of student relations for the student alumni association.

It’s refreshing to see not a single painted black face in the crowd and that the student body found something better to do than mock slave captures and lynchings. Still, how strong is the focus of DSU on education instead of sports, plays and this type of activity? What is the drop-out rate?

So just how many “painted black faces in the crowd,” were you expecting to see? And are you trying to start crap about black folks who use make up, or are you trying to start crap about some type of so called “racial insults?” Or are you just full of crap, and trying to get rid of some of it?

That was a former student activity. Confederate flags, too. Look it up in the old year books. That was brought up during the naming of the university. It was considered a racist activity. Good to see the school has moved away from that activity which continued into the 2000s.
