DSU Vocal Jazz Project, Men’s and Women’s Choruses give final performance

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State University Vocal Jazz Project and Men’s and Women’s Choruses will take stage for the final time this 2012-13 performance season with a special spring concert next Wednesday at the Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSU campus.

The Women’s Chorus, led by Rachel Cox, will begin the program with the great early American gospel medley “Sing/Swing Low/Chariot” and a beautiful Easter anthem entitled “Jesus, The Very Thought of Thee.” The ensemble will also perform the Gabriel Faure standard “Ave Maria,” “Tatkovina” by Greg Jasperse and the Canadian folk song and lullaby “Song for the Mira.”

The Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Robert Briggs, is a small but powerful group of men singing sacred music, beautiful art songs and novelty pieces to form a full palette of musical offerings. Several of the pieces feature composers and arrangers who have written the songs themselves.

The DSU Vocal Jazz Project is also directed by Briggs and will perform six fun numbers, including three inspired by Hollywood, beginning with a choreographed performance of the Henry Mancini instrumental theme to “The Pink Panther,” “What’ll I Do?” from the film “The Great Gatsby” and the theme to the popular television show “Route 66,” written by Bobby Troup. In addition, the Project will perform Dean Martin’s classic “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” along with the 1983 Billy Joel hit “The Longest Time” and the fast-paced jazz standard “Everybody Loves My Baby.”

General admission tickets for each concert will be available at the door and cost $5 for adults and $1 for DSU students and faculty and staff with current ID. Patrons may also purchase tickets prior to the evening’s performance at the Eccles Fine Arts Center or Avenna Center box offices or online.
