ST. GEORGE – There’s an old Saturday Night Live bit called “Things that make you go, ‘Hmmm.’”
The late night show could have been talking about Wednesday’s soccer match at Pine View, where the Panthers beat the Desert Hills Thunder 4-0.
See, DH had only allowed four goals total in eight previous games going into Wednesday night. And Pine View, not exactly an offensive juggernaut, had only scored eight goals total in six previous games. In fact, the Panthers had been shut out three times this season.
But everything went Pine View’s way in Panther Stadium Wednesday night as Keith Collins scored two goals and Justin Jones recorded the shutout for the Panthers in the whitewashing.
Daniel Arellano and Michael Cardenas also scored as Pine View jumped into a second-place tie with the win. The Panthers, 3-4 overall, but 3-2 in region play, have nine team points, tying them with Desert Hills and Cedar for second place in the region.
Pine View has a three-game winning streak and plays at first-place Dixie next Tuesday.
The Thunder, who have shut out opponents five times this season, offered little resistance in the Pine View win. One of the top defensive teams in the state, DH allowed Pine View two goals in each half.
The Panthers play at Dixie next Tuesday. Desert Hills will try and re-group and host Snow Canyon Tuesday.
Dixie 2, Cedar 1 (OT)
The Flyers are holding down first place, barely, with the OT win against Cedar. Alex Green hit the equalizer in the second half and Mitch Wilkinson made the game-winner in the extra period. Brock Shipp had Cedar’s lone goal. Dixie, 6-3 overall and 4-1 in region, is home for Pine View Tuesday. Cedar, 6-2-1 overall and 3-2 in region, is at Hurricane Tuesday.
Hurricane 2, Canyon View 0
Zack Wolsleger had both goals for the Tigers, who improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in region play. Kayden Jackson got the shutout for the Tigers.
Canyon View, which dropped its seventh straight and is 2-8 on the season, next plays at Snow Canyon next Friday night. Hurricane plays at home vs. Cedar Tuesday.
