Shooting and pursuit in Cedar City

CEDAR CITY – At approximately 9:35 p.m. yesterday, Cedar City police heard multiple gunshots in the area of Center and Main Street in downtown Cedar City. A vehicle was observed by officers fleeing the area at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit began.

The Utah Highway Patrol Helicopter was called upon to assist with the pursuit, which ended when the-19-year old male driver struck a parked car.

Officers were able to safely secure the suspect. He is currently being treated at a local area hospital for minor injuries sustained during the crash. Police said that the suspect expressed suicidal thoughts.

It was determined that the suspect did shoot at a moving vehicle in the area from which it had fled. The people in the vehicle shot at were not injured, but said that the suspect fired multiple gunshots at their vehicle.

Cedar City’s release on the matter stated that currently there is no further public safety risk. Charges have not been filed at this time. The name of the suspect will be released once he is treated and booked into jail.

Persons arrested are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
